We Had a Few Issues With the SiteToday

Yes, folks, we were hacked by some very nice (note the sarcasm) people from Turkey. The hack to our site was relatively harmless, but it was a bit annoying.

Our wonderful web host, Ravenwebhosting.com, figured out the fix for the issue, and sent it along to me. I have taken care of it, and we shall see if it holds.

Please send me a pm if you are having any problems!

Winchester Rifles to Be Discontinued

According to a story on the AP newswire, the traditional Winchester rifles carried by pioneers, movie stars and Wild West lawmen will be discontinued in March. The company, originally based in New Haven, CT, and currently owned by Belgium Corporation Herstal Group, has stated it has lost money for the last several years manufacturing the older model rifles and guns. By March, the company plans to only manufacture modern, high-end models, that are manufactured outside the United States.

The actual news story is HERE

A sad day indeed, when the most popular, and well known American firearm, is being discontinued...

Preservation Assured for Original ''Uncle Tom's'' Cabin

The slave cabin that inspired Harriet Beecher Stowe's 1852 novel "Uncle Tom's Cabin" will be preserved thanks to Maryland officials who agreed on Thursday to buy it for $1 million. In the early 19th century, the gray log cabin was home to Josiah Henson, a slave Stowe used as a model for the Uncle Tom character in her novel, a global bestseller that ignited abolitionist fervor in the United States before the Civil War.
USS MONITOR RESEARCHERS DEBUNK 142-YEAR-OLD LEGEND OF 'CAT IN THE CANNON'

Article from NOAA
Aug. 25, 2005 — Conservators from The Mariners' Museum and NOAA scientists were able to debunk a 142-year-old legend with 90-percent confidence this past week after spending most of August documenting and excavating the bore of both 11-inch Dahlgren cannons from the Civil War ironclad USS Monitor's iconic gun turret. One of the most popular legends in the history of the Monitor, it began with a crewmember from the vessel, Francis B. Butts, who claimed during the night the ironclad sank, he shoved his coat and boots in one cannon, and a cat in the other.

CWDG Online Site Maintenance and Moving Day!

As announced last weekend, we are moving the site to a new web hosting company. Tonight is the night!

The CWDG will be down for about twelve hours beginning at 8:00 PM tonight and hopefully ending tomorrow morning. Any posts made after 8:00 PM this evening (Thursday, August 25, 2005), may not translate over to the new server. We will also be upgrading the version of the portal software we are using.

We regret any inconvenience that the down time may cause anyone, but the move is for the best. We will be with a more reliable hosing company and will have fewer outages.

Thanks for your patience and understanding.

The CWDg Online Will Be Moving!

Due to the annoyances of the server issues the CWDG Online has been having recently, we have decided to move the CWDG Online to a new host. Hopefully, the move will be relatively painless. We hope to have the new server set up shortly, and move the site and forum boards as soon as we can. Once we make the move, the boards will be transferred intact, with all posts and all member registrations transferring over. None of the site's content will be lost.

It's quite likely that the site will be down for a few hours at some point as a consequence of the pending move, and we apolgize for any inconvenience that might cause. However, we ultimately believe that we will be better off for the move, as we're moving to a more stable server which will have less outages. Hang in there....the inconvenience will be short-term and a new and better CWDG will emerge on the back end.
