In MarylandReb's "question" thread, hawkeyejohn mentioned St. Albans, VT, site of a raid and bank robbery by some Confederates who infiltrated from Canada on Oct. 19th, 1864.
While frequently cited as the northernmost land action of the Civil War, the St. Albans raid was just a bit south of a similar action that happened 3 months earlier. Anyone care to take a guess? _________________ Mike Nugent

CSS Tallahassee captured 5 ships off the coast of New England? That's the only thing I can think of that far North other than the ST Alban's raid. _________________ He who finds no pleasure in a naked sword, a falcon's flight, a noble horse, a beautiful woman, has no real lust for life. Rick is correct in that it did occur in Maine. MarylandReb is wrong though as I'm looking for a land action vs. a naval engagement. _________________ Mike Nugent

I came across a raid on the bank in Calais Maine.....is that the one? _________________ He who finds no pleasure in a naked sword, a falcon's flight, a noble horse, a beautiful woman, has no real lust for life. (Early German Sword inscription)
On July 18th, 1864, 14 men led by a Captain William Collins of the 15th MS, infiltrated from St. John, New Brunswick with the intent of robbing the bank in Calais and causing as much mischief as they could. As the townspeople had been forwarned however, Collins and 3 others were arrested inside the bank and subsequently sentenced to 3 years in the Maine State Prison.
(Calais, Maine is at 45 degrees 5 minutes North Latitude, St. Albans Vermont is at 44 degrees, 49 minutes North Latitude.) _________________ Mike Nugent

Evening all,
For those interested, they actually made a movie about the St. Alban's Raid back in the 1950s. IIRC, Van Heflin was the star of the flick. Been awhile since I have seen it, and while it was atypical Hollywood stretching out the story, it was a pretty decent movie story wise. IIRC, Lee Marvin and Anne Bancroft were other actors who were in the film.

Steve:
Van Heflin played Col. Bennett Young in the 1954 movie. Van Heflin's romantic lead was Anne Bancroft. And you are correct that Lee Marvin was in the movie as well. One of my old favorites Richard Boone, Have Gun Will Travel, was also in the cast.
