Several months ago, I was asked by America's Civil War and Civil War Times Editor Dana Shoaf to write a feature piece on Buford's cavalry in the Gettysburg Campaign, along with a 4-map study of his troopers at Gettysburg. They appear in this July's issue of ACW Magazine, on newsstands now. For the maps, I've plotted out Buford's defense on the first morning, Gamble and Devin's fighting on the flanks, and the skirmish in Pitzer's Woods on the morning of July 2.

If anyone has seen the article and maps I'd like to hear what you think of it.

JD,

I have gone back and reread the article again.....

It is superb...

As I noted to JD earlier, it just brought memories of all the times of sitting with JD, Eric, and even Mike, in the Avenue over lunch, or breakfast or maybe even a cup of coffee, or maybe standing out by the statues of the J & J boys, or some street corner..

Or sitting in the Mine after a day of stompin, and chatting about what they had learned and even how the GROUND just oooozzzss the story..

Ah yes what sweet memories.. I cant wait to do it again..

Next guys, in the Mine, first round.. On me. Just so we can toast and celebrate your success together!
Jim

Jim,

You're on! Never refuse free booze - Rick taught me that.

And thanks for the kind words! Mindy, hope you enjoyed it!

Are you and Eric still on for writing a multi-volume work on the cavalry at Gettysburg? Have you begun work on the Monocacy work?

Perhaps, I ought to slow down, and let you enjoy/celebrate the article you just had published, along with your book that is coming out in just a couple of weeks.

The answer is yes, we're still doing the multi-volume set. In fact, I started writing last night. We're working on it while we continue gathering material for Monocacy. I've usually got more than one project going at any given time anyway.

Eric already has our first chapter of the multi-volume set laid out, and this weekend I'm working on the second chapter. Good parts of the thing are already written (from our previous works) so all they will take is updating and conforming into this new work. We figure that just a little less than half or so of the volumes already has been written.

The first volume, after a set-up chapter, goes from Brandy Station through about June 26 (or perhaps the 30th - we'll see how that goes). Eric is doing Brandy, I'll be writing up Aldie, Middleburg, and Upperville, and then we have lots and lots of details, skirmishes and movements in between and for the week prior to Gettysburg.

Everything will be done in context with the main armies' movements and decisions and we're really looking forward to putting the entire story together.

Hey guys

I did enjoy the article JD and thought the maps particularly helpful. I passed the magazine on to my dad for Father's Day with his other things and he he dove right reading it out loud to all at the picnic table. Thanks for your good work.

Will order my copy soon of the 2nd volume. I like that you guys are going to complete this series of books. Unlike some Hollywood movie moguls who see no point in completing the last full measure.

Thanks, Mindy - and that's really neat about your Dad reading it out loud. Very cool, and makes me feel really good!

Makes it all worthwhile, believe me

Hey JD, read the article last weekend. Great job, I enjoyed the writing from start to finish.

Thanks Mitch!

A few weeks back, Blake Magner told me that he took the article to the Buford statue one morning about 6am, sat down and read it, and tried to imagine the events that I wrote about. I thought that was really neat. It's very cool when something you write is used in such a fashion. That's what it's all about.

I really do appreciate the kind words.
