The tree tried to take out the iron fence it has been shadowing for years.
Speaking of the "Sickles' Fence", I did not know the history behind it and still can't believe the irony of where it came from.
Of course this fence has an interesting history or legend of its own. It was originally located in Lafayette Park in Washington, D.C. across the street from the White House. Near this fence, in 1859, Congressman Daniel Sickles murdered Philip Barton Key, the son of Francis Scott Key, for having an affair with Sickles’ wife, Theresa.
The Lafayette Park or Lafayette Square iron fence (Sickles’ Fence) was donated to the Gettysburg Battlefield Memorial Association by a joint resolution of Congress on October 12, 1888 through the efforts of Congressman Daniel Sickles. The District of Columbia for some reason declared the fence was not longer needed, and Sickles urged Congress to pass the resolution. The legend states that Sickles wanted the fence on display at Gettysburg so that he could “show the world how I got away with murder.” _________________ "Let us have faith that right makes might..."

That fence story is always a good one and dont feel too badly, most people don't know about it. Damn shame about the tree.........I hate to see those old ones go.

It doesn't say where the money is coming from to pay for this, but I have to add that it would appear that those who are working on this are perhaps doing it as a labor of love and I commend them greatly for it.
Is there a general consensus of opinions from the townsfolk about this annual event? Good, bad, indifferent?
I'm trying to be open minded for once and will try and withhold comment since I have not actually been there during bike week to form a solid opinion.
(Although, perhaps the fact that I would avoid that week at all hazards is probably a good indication as to which side I would lean.)
I hate large crowds and noise to begin with so I suppose that would bias my opinion anyway. _________________ "Let us have faith that right makes might..."

No real consensus that I'm aware of. Some folks like the $$$$ they bring in and some folks hate the noise........take your pick.
Personally, I dont have any problems with bikers, but I have to admit that if you happen to be in the Burg during Bike Week (as I have any number of times).......things can get a little loud. Still, if I rode...........which thankfully I don't, I cant imagine a much prettier place to cruise than GNMP..........so I hardly blame them for doing so.
It wouldnt be my optimal week to visit, but it's hardly the end of the world as some folks make it out to be.
Just my .02

The red bricks are supposed to have a white stenciled outline.
Good luck with that.
The Wills House, which was supposed to open on the anniversary of Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address, November 19, 2008, has now had its opening delayed.
The National Park Service now plans on opening the Wills House on President Lincoln’s birthday, February 12, 2008.
Does anything in town get done when it's supposed to? I think the VC & Museum opened on time, but I can't say that it was exactly complete at that point. (Hopefully it's NOT complete as it stands now, nor do I hope that it will ever really reach a "finishing" point.)

It might be open in February. Unless it snows.
Then they will close the roads and no construction will be done until its 70 degrees again. Plus, you cant buy building supplies in the Winter because everything is only open from noon to 2pm.
Who knows? Am I suprised?

The locals and business owners on the Square just called. They want their sidewalk back. _________________ "Let us have faith that right makes might..."

Chris - to my best knowledge last year there were (already) couple of incidents of stabbings that were fast hush-hushed in media (local and otherwise). As Ellis will confirm - while these things start off as a weekend and attract "respectable" riders, sooner or later it becomes a week...OOOPS... seems THAT already happened as per above and DOES attract undesirables. The violence and the clean-up that come with are nothing to be proud about _________________ I Remain

At least all of the reenactors behave themselves respectfully. _________________ "Let us have faith that right makes might..."

No, but some moron reenactor nearly burned a guys toe off in front of the Wax Museum a few weeks ago by firing his powder into it from about two inches away.
My point? Idiocy comes in all guises, leather and wool included.

Anyone feel a little sense of loss about losing the old Visitor's Center and even the building housing the Cyclorama?

Are the years gone by creating more sentimentalism? Because a few years ago, I'd probably just say, "knock those suckers down" and move on. _________________ "Let us have faith that right makes might..."
