Was re-reading everyone's postings, and wanted to let Steven Spielberg fans know he has plans to do a movie based on Doris Kearns Goodwin's book, "Team of Rivals." Liam Neeson is playing the title role...Abe, of course!

Hi Jim...
Liam Neeson was in Springfield earlier this year doing research, so guess it's still in the works, although it's been delayed in the past. Maybe it will be released during the anniversary of the Civil War. Although, I remember when filming was to start a couple of years ago, with a target date to release in 2009, for the 200th anniversary of Abe's birth.
Hopefully one of these days...:>) But it looks like the plans are still on the table.

Anna,
It would be wonderful if it is made. BTW, there is a discussion somewhere, maybe even in this thread where we discuss that we wish Speilberg had been the one to do G & G..
This should be very interesting. Anymore on who is going to play the other characters?
I wouldnt want to be the guy who has to play Little MAC or Grant.. Or even members of the cabinet..

Uh... Jim - Honestly Bro, there are times that you worry me FOR REAL!!!
What the HECK? - It's a ROLE IN A MOVIE! Its a JOB! You go in, play your part, get paid (rather handsomly may I add) and forgeddaboudid
On the other hand - hmmm, you're probably right. Who knows what kind of tyrant might Abe Lincoln become with Lliam Neeson portraying him. Why, I could almost see him whipping out a laser saber in frustration and slicing William Seward's head off
(What is a shame IMHO is that obviously we ran out of Great AMERICAN actors worthy of the role! Raymond Massey & Gregory Peck - where are you? ) _________________ I Remain

You know general you do worry me some..
I know its a job, but Linclon and Grant are both VERY well known people in US History. Not like Old Pete..
So those who take on the part are going to be held up against the real person. We do it here LOL!

With all due respect to Spielberg, I'm not sure I'd want any of the majority of established people in Hollywood handling historical events. There's obviously been a few exceptions.
And although some would say that Ron Maxwell is 1 for 2 in CW films, he's at least more of an independent and I'd put more trust in him. Certainly he'd be more historically accurate. _________________ "Let us have faith that right makes might..."

WAIT! Are you telling me that Jack and Rose were not real? What about Buster? Rhett & Scarlett? So all of those actors who played them had it "easier"
OK I understand what you're saying but I will give you the same "argument" as I always give in similar cases -NONE of us can hold anyone up against the real person because NONE of us has any inklings as to what the "real person" was like!
Now if Spielberg did a movie and there was a Jim Lamason in there and someone asked me an opinon about what kind of a job the actor did - I think I'd be able to give a reasonably proper answer.
Hence the difference

Just to pick nits...
at the time Mr. Massey first portrayed Lincoln ('Abe Lincoln in Illinois') on stage and then in the film of the same name, he was still a Canadian. He did go on to become an American citizen later.

Hi everyone. I was reading through the posts and for the life of me I couldn't remember who I had heard was possibly going to play Mary Lincoln in Spielberg's production of "Team of Rivals." I happened to do a search and found this information...
Not too much information available, but hopefully the film will start shooting next year. When Liam Neeson was in Springfield, I heard he had lost alot of weight in preparation for the part. I just keep hearing this German "Schindler's List" accent instead of Abe's high pitched Kentucky drawl...:>)
Raymond Massey is my favorite "Abe" too. His portrayal more closely matches my perception of the man, his personality, characteristics, etc. I can't really imagine Liam Neeson as Abe, but hope I'll be pleasantly surprised. As for Sally Field portraying Mary, I have always seen Kathy Bates as a more realistic choice...:>) With all deference and respect to Mary, I think Sally Field is too petite and, well, pretty, to be Mary, and her "cute" and "perky" personnae doesn't match Mary's personality. Although Sally Field's a fantastic, Oscar-winning actress, for me I believe it's going to be hard to pretend I'm watching Mary Lincoln.
It's so true...we each have our own idea of what our Civil War icons were like. It's interesting for me to read how my perceptions of various figures, such as Jackson for instance, agree or differ with others on this website. I wish there was some way to go back in time to meet our heros and see how they really were, hear their voices, etc. I'd go back in a heartbeat! But, I wouldn't want to know what I'm missing...like air conditioning, indoor plumbing, etc. :>)
Take care...

Not to suggest Kathy Bates is unattractive...:>) Her appearance, to me, is just more suggestive of Mary.

Just wanted to give an update on the Stephen Spielberg movie based on Doris Kearn Goodwin's "Team of Rivals." I read in the Chicago Sun-Times that production is now scheduled for 2009. The screenplay is nearly finished. Filming is supposed to commence in Illinois next spring.
So, hopefully it'll happen this time...:>) As 2009 is the 200th anniversary of Abe's birth, it could be an extra incentive to start production.
