Okay, folks, we're 60 days from the muster, and I am VERY unhappy about how this is coming together.

As we sit at the moment, we have barely enough programming to cover Saturday. We have nothing for Friday and nothing for Sunday. If I move my Brandy Station tour forward from Thursday to Friday, that covers Friday activities for four people plus me. So far, precisely two people--Rick and Christina--have paid for the Saturday night dinner.

So, here's the deal.

We either get sufficient volunteers to lead tours to fill out the programming in the next seven days, or the muster is canceled. And if the muster is indeed canceled, that would be a sad thing, but it's not worth the effort for the extremely minimal response we've gotten. If you guys don't care enough to make it a success, then there is no reason for me to put or anyone else to put in the tremendous amount of effort that it takes to pull one of these things together.

This is in your hands, folks. How this plays out is entirely up to you.

Eric

I know I said it in another thread but so you can keep the count in one place I'm sad that I can't make it this year because it's the same weekend as my son's college graduation. I was truly looking forward to seeing everyone again and learning from folk more knowledgeable than I. It was a highlight of 2009 for me. I hope it happens and is a big success, and I look forward to the next gathering.

Cheers,
Jen

Allow me a moment to clarify something…

I know it’s always been the unofficial policy that our tours are 2½ - 3 hours each and they take place ‘on the field’ and they’re led by an "expert" (LBG, author, etc.), but this has led to the bulk of the burden falling on the same people, over and over. One of the reasons I introduced the concept of the ‘mini’ presentations was to take the pressure off them and allow the able amateurs to pitch in.

Maybe I wasn’t clear enough on the concept.

Everyone here has some little niche thing they’re interested in. All I’m asking is that you take 45 minutes to an hour to share it with the rest of us.

Over the years I’ve attended some fascinating tours on topics that I previously didn’t know much if anything about, and they sprang from the leader’s interest in a particular soldier or unit – George Sandoe, the 14th Connecticut, the 8th Georgia.

Maybe your G-G-G-grand uncle was with the 2nd Mass at Spangler’s Spring and you have a collection of his letters / journals recounting the battle. Maybe you’ve researched the carriage building trade in Gettysburg in the 1860’s and where the manufacturing buildings were in town and how they played into the fighting; or the Great Awakening that swept the country and how it affected the attitudes of the troops in Pickett's Division; maybe you think the press reporting from Gettysburg influenced the NYC draft riots which in turn influenced the troops sent from Gettysburg to quell the riots; or maybe you have a collection of documents or relics pertaining to a particular soldier, or unit, or local business, church or school.

I know you all like to expound on this stuff late into the evening over adult beverages – how about if you expound on it during the day for the benefit of us all?

[quote="The General"]Okay, folks, we're 60 days from the muster, and I am VERY unhappy about how this is coming together... Eric, I'd step up for my take on De Trobriand's efforts on the second day. But, sadly, it may or not relate to political / history repeating itself. Something that's tab00 on the CWDG. . . Best. James Africa

We have never done anything in the Cashtown/Cashtown Pass area (that I can recall) - for the GDG Muster in June, I'm conducting a tour of the June 23 Cashtown Pass Ambush (some local citizens ambushed and killed a member of the 14th VA Cavalry there on that date). I could do that tour if the folks would like, and it would give me some practice, too.

There is some mention of events in that area on June 26, and we'd look at the wartime roads along with some homes and taverns. Lot of Cashtown, pass, roads discussion.

2 hours should be sufficient (can be a little more if time allows) - thoughts?

JD

Sounds good, JD. The section on the bushwhacking in the Guide brought back memories; remind me to tell you the story of Kross, Dave Roth and myself tracking down the locations, it's pretty funny.

Okay, here's the deal.

JD was the only one to step forward in response to the last call for volunteers.

We have a decent day of programming for Saturday but that is all we have. We have nothing for Friday and nothing for Sunday.

I am about to pull the plug on this thing altogether unless someone gives me a reason not to do so in the next 24 hours.

Eric

Darn,
I would go, and I would add, three more... When were we going to leave?
If we got out of NJ fairly early, we could go. ANd yes that would be three.
Sorry to be so late to it all. JIM
