That's what it's all about.

Those were all new to me as well. I'm sure there's more out there we haven't seen.

Who knows what we're missing given that many photo plates from Gardner and Brady were destroyed before we got a permanent record of them.

I'll keep digging and will continue to post the more obscure ones I find.

Very cool! I've never seen these before, either. Thanks!

Admittedly, I'm struggling with this one. If anyone can point out a landmark or structure to help get me/us oriented, that would be great.

My only guess is that the camera is facing the town from slightly SE (notice it's labeled from Cemetery Ridge.) What tower they are looking from is beyond me. The 1972 Gettysburg Space Needle hadn't been built yet.

I think you may be right about the orientation and location. Is that possibly Ziegler's Grove with the 108th NY monument in the foreground? I can't figure out what the other monument might be, but I also see flank markers.

I'd bet it was taken from a balloon. Isn't that how Paul Philippoteaux and his guys got the pictures to create the cyclorama? Might even be one of his pics, I suppose.

On the other hand, I could be completely in left field.

*edit* HA! Got it!! Yes, I believe that's Ziegler's Grove, looking north, with the 108th NY Infantry monument in the foreground and the 126th NY Infantry monument in the background.

Good job.

Would that mean the Bryan House would be in the lower left just outside of the view of the camera?

I'd also say that the 3 structures in the left center of the photo are no longer extant and would be sitting on Emmitsburg Road. While the road in the center of the photo must be a park road. (Hancock Ave.)

That area has really changed. I wonder if this is one photo they'll use to rehabilitate Zeigler's Grove.

There's also a GAR monument of Albert Woolson someone within sight of the area where this photo was taken. It may have been put there after this photo was taken.

This was the best I could do. The modern picture is at least in the vicinity of the b & w one. I probably needed to climb over the fence
and walk out in the field to get these matched up better.

OK. Somewhere awhile back I posted a few random photographs and we discussed whether or not it was from the first "reenactment." I thought they were posted on this thread, but they were not.

Well, here's the story to those photos.

The narrative of idiots.

Whoever the dolt was who put the text together should immediately be sent to a "Re-education Camp"

I stopped reading when I saw the the Confederates had an "Iron Brigade".

Good Lord! Unless it was a 6th grader, I'm not impressed.

Regards

Rick

Didn't notice any egregious errors.

I like the 3rd photo though. They did kind of combine the spelling of cavalry and the place where Christ was crucified though.

I'd change the caption to this:

He shoots! He scores! Buford's dismounted cavalry battles the advanced Confederate line... while dodging soccer balls.

Corydon, as you know, but the author did not..........the Confederates did not have an IRON BRIGADE.

In my world, thats egregious.

It's about five pictures in and served as an ending point for my interest..........

Regards,

Rick

I see it now. That's bad, even for a non-historian.

Add that to what I edited above.

And they make it sound as though 1212 out of 1883 men were killed.
I'm sure a lot of people reading that don't know that casualties include wounded and missing as well as killed.

I remember being at a Perryville reenactment and the chick giving us a synposis on the bus ride there said that 8,000 were killed. I always have the "life" decision where I ask myself, "Should I correct the history for the other folks or should I remain silent in order to not embarrass the guide?"
I just sat there and remained silent.
