I'm just throwing stuff out there because I'm tired of waiting around to hear about the next incident. We obviously can't stop all of it, but if we can minimize the amount of incidents, that's a start.
It's probably about time for the "Red Flag" brigade to come out and display their crap on another monument. _________________ "Let us have faith that right makes might..."

I am one of those who feel that if the kid or person is under 18 it has to fall on the parents. I know I know, there are parents working two jobs a piece (Especially down there), and also why should they be punished for the sins of the child? But responsibility is responsibility. You know something and yes I know its almost 50 years after the fact, but I would NEVER EVER have thought of doing something like that. My Mom would have come down on my like the wrath of God HIMSELF.. And after that was done, my Dad would have followed, then my two uncles and then my cousin.. And when they were finished besides the physical punishment the emotional pounding that I would have taken would have marred me for life.. I never would have heard the end of it.. So I feared my family more the law enforcement.
Maybe thats the difference. THese kids have no fear of family.. no fear of punishment,. And thats more of an upbringing kind of thing then any thing else.

It states that they might open it to limited visitation by next year.
Can't wait. For an old town, it seems like there is always something "new" to see there. _________________ "Let us have faith that right makes might..."

I know i'd like to see it. Looks like there's lots of work to do though.

It should be interesting to see exactly how the Foundation is going to handle that site once they let people in there to look around.

Perhaps an all-encompassing paid ticket that bundles other sites they manage - such as the Wills House?
I think they'd have to have at least one person manning the Spangler site, within a limited schedule.
I'd be ok with paid admissions, within reason. _________________ "Let us have faith that right makes might..."

Couple things.
Gettysburg Daily has not has a post since last May, so unfortunately, they are posting even less than advertised. I didn't figure they could keep up with a daily post, but I was still hoping to see something new every once in awhile.
The Lutheran Theological Seminary has big plans in the offing.
They are opening up 4 floors in Schmucker Hall. You'll be able to view the battlefield from a 4th floor, but I doubt everyone will be able to go up the cupola, save for some special events. They are also planning on cutting down tall trees on the west side (Ya!), as well as creating more parking spaces, more walkways, and removing the tennis courts. I say, "Win, win, win."
Benefits of this development:
-- It lowers the parking density in the grove:
There will be a decrease in the number of parking spaces in the Seminary Grove from approximately 68 now
to 34 – creating multiple islands of green space more than 35 feet wide;
-- Adds significantly to vehicle and pedestrian safety:
Moves a curb cut and relocates pedestrian traffic to an intersection, added in 2001,
which significantly calmed traffic and will focus pedestrian crossing where traffic is
stopped; walking pathway is ADA compliant, opening up a walking historical experience
for all persons in the place where it happened
-- Creates green space:
to create opportunity to plant more than twice the number of trees – several of which
are showing the end of their life-cycle;
-- Removes the non-historic tennis courts:
A highly visually distracting feature will be removed;
-- Opportunity to recreate a portion of the barricade, west of the Ridge:
assembled to help interpret the last stand of the Union forces on July 1, 1863, giving
the public an interpretation (wayside #9 addresses this feature) it has never had before;
-- Adds trees:
The development cuts non-witness trees and plants up to twice the number there now –
some of which will be consistent with the Journey Through Hallowed Ground signature
planting program to plant 620,000 trees in the corridor, one for every civil war casualty
--Overall improvement of the view shed:
Trees now obscure Schmucker Hall from the west, making for a new and more historic
view with new planting plan. Plans do not include suburbanized planting scheme or
auto tire stops for parking areas, maintaining the natural character of the landscape;
--Addresses Parking Needs:
With the added public interpretive venue of the Gettysburg Seminary Ridge Museum,
Parking capacity will be added but in hidden areas behind the library and out of view
from the Seminary Ridge and Reynolds Avenue; current seminary programming exceeds
parking capacity several times a year, and museum is expected to attract upwards of 60
thousand or more visitors. _________________ "Let us have faith that right makes might..."

Not sure if this is a fairly new photo or not, but perhaps someone who has been here lately can tell if this is roughly the current condition around the "Old Dorm."

That looks to me to be a picture from a few months ago. The last time I saw it, they were busy fucking up the west side. The east side largely shown here, was already seeded and paved.
Let me say right out front that whats gone on up at the Seminary is largely unknown and a chronic damn shame. Nobody much really knows about it, and nothing really can be, or could have been done about it in the first place as the Seminary owns its own land up there and really can tell the NPS to bugger off.
The ADA requirements alone will massively change the western slope as the mere grade needed to accommodate this requirement will totally change the view. Not that the tennis court was scenic, but even with all the landscaping and beautification they will indulge in, the end result is that the area around the Seminary is being drastically changed under the guise of preservation.
It might look very nice when its done.....but the whole thing has been shitty as far as I am concerned.

Despite my optimism, I'm always a little leery whenever ANYONE changes battlefield landscape. Heck, even the NPS put up fenceline not far from this spot that wasn't historically accurate. (to their credit, they removed it after the outcry) Not to mention getting carried away with some of their tree cutting activities.
As far as this project goes, I haven't seen anything yet that I object to. I hope they don't get carried away with having too many walkways (could spoil the scene of the historic photo we've all seen of the guy on the fence looking west towards the Old Dorm) or create too many parking spaces or gawdy signs directing folks to this area. This spot has always been great because it has a lower profile and I'd hate to see that spoiled.
I wonder where the LTS' folks property ends and where the NPS property begins on the westside. Does it go beyond the Lee HQ marker to the west or is that the dividing line? _________________ "Let us have faith that right makes might..."

The only good thing about the Seminary area project is that its already so ruined up there, it really doesn't upset me very much. Getting in a real twist about landscaping in an area where Semi's are whizzing by 24/7 is pretty useless. Whatever they do up there, I wont ever see it anyway...........
