Major Taylor- Will the General have some breakfast?

General Lee- No, thank you.

Major Taylor-
We have flapjacks in small mountains.

Fresh butter, bacon, wagons of ham,
apple butter, ripe cherries.

You really ought to pitch in, sir.

Courtesy of our host,
the great Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

I always wondered about that line. What the hell are flapjacks in small mountains? The only thing I could come up with is that they have a lot of them and they are stacked really high -like mountains.

I remember watching all of you marching across the field, General! My friend and I started walking not too far from the No. Carolina monument off of Confederate Ave., and then we "obliqued" toward where all of you were walking and then followed at a slower pace nearby. The flags looked so beautiful floating in the breeze. I can only imagine how much it meant for all of you to have marched on the same ground as your heroes, exactly 140 years later to the hour. I must admit I shed a few tears, touched by the solemity of the occasion, and so honored to be there. Could the soldiers who walked that ground on the afternoon of July 3rd, 1863 possibly imagine that, 140 years later, people would be walking the same ground to honor their bravery and sacrifice?

Thank you for posting the photos, General! I will try to post a couple of my photos for you and Ellis to see how magnificent your "charge" looked from a distance...:>)

OK, this isn’t a favorite line, and it isn’t even from ‘da movie’ – it’s from ‘da other movie’…
And I suppose it’s picking nits, BUT –

In the touching little vignette featuring the Chamberlains at home, Fanny says:

“That poem of Lovelace. That beautiful, horrible, damnable, lovely, sad poem. I think that you recited it in my dream.”

And Lawrence responds:

“Lovelace. "Off to the English Civil War"?
I would not dare presume to quote it now.”

Fanny then recites the poem –

Tell me not, sweet, I am unkind
That from the nunnery
Of thy chaste breast and quiet mind
To warlike arms I fly.

True, a new mistress now I serve
The first foe in the field
And with a sterner faith embrace
A sword, a horse, a shield.

Yet this inconstancy is such
As thou too shalt adore.
I could not love thee, dear, so much
Loved I not honor more.

This has always irked the hell out of me – it’s simple enough to look it up! It’s not like it’s some totally obscure piece of work – why did it have to be titled and recited incorrectly?

Yes, Richard Lovelace (1618-1658) wrote it, but:

TO LUCASTA, Going to the Warres.

I.

TELL me not (Sweet) I am unkinde,
That from the Nunnerie
Of thy chaste breast, and quiet minde,
To Warre and Armes I flie.

II.

True ; a new Mistresse now I chase,
The first Foe in the Field ;
And with a stronger Faith imbrace
A Sword, a Horse, a Shield.

III.

Yet this Inconstancy is such,
As you too shall adore ;
I could not love thee (Deare) so much,
Lov'd I not Honour more.

(The Poems of Richard Lovelace; London: Unit Library, Ltd., 1904)

OK – so… ‘warlike arms’ rather than ‘war and arms’, ‘sterner faith’ rather than ‘stronger faith’… maybe whoever copied it had crummy handwriting or something, but didn’t anyone notice that ‘serve’ and ‘embrace’ don’t rhyme? ARGH!

Sorry. It’s the little stuff that drives me nuts.
Done venting – I now return you to the thread already in progress.

Oh GOD! few words that went un-capitalized!

P.S. I could not love thee (Deare) so much,
Lov'd I not Honour more.

" I was there for two separate weekends.......but if anything I did wound up on film, it was only as one gray dot amongst many. "

Question answered. Must get out the magnifying glass to look for the grey dot. Pardon me, sir, missed that.

Lin - if they are going to quote it, it should be the quote ! Thanks for clarifying it. That is one of my favorite scenes. I guess it's all the pretty clothes and furniture.

General Armistead - how can I DO that?

Bob - indeed you were. As a matter of fact if you look at the same photo (#3) you will see the unmistakable black trim on your frock coat a little to the right of where Mitch is
(and to the right of you is a "conspicous" black hat belonging to...well...we'll just leave that alone )

Ah, now I see it. I must have done a real great job of repressing some memories from that time.

And five years later I got to stand at the wall as they all came across again.

And its still a stirring and sobering sight.

May they all rest in peace and may God bless them all.

Jim - I remember it very well. As a matter of fact - yours was the first hand that thrust a (much needed) bottle of cold water into mine (so...much belated THANKS!)

As to the other issue - you said "you'd rather forget". I caution those who lived through that summer to try and reasonably separate the events from the person. IMHO - those 11 days were one of the BEST OF MY LIFE! The people we all met, the things we all experienced, the Camaraderie we all felt - why would we want to forget THAT?!??
Like it or not - may of us wouldn't be here if nothing happened there, you understand?!?!?
There would be no reminiscense about the "ghost cannons" on July 2, there would be no Svetty Peeg stories, no "Soyuz" pod and no "you'll EAT PORK!"...
There would be no "Da Wedding" , no "Civil War Hussies" and no Bathroom Man...
Miz Annie would not sing...

NAW! Too much GOOD stuff would have to be forgotten - and IMHO its just not worth it!

And so... back to Da Quotes:

It's always the same question forever.
What else can we do? If they fight... we must fight with them.
And does it matter, after all, who wins?
Was that ever really the question?
Will almighty God ask that question in the end?

I should have been more well definitive..
I dont want to remember whats his name..
But I WILL NEVER FORGET WHAT WE DID THERE!!
THEY WERE 4 of the GREATEST DAYS I have EVER< EVER known..

Yes.. I do remember my hand being the first. I remember making a point to do that. Some of those around me, I am sure thought it was just the sweat running down both of our face, but I am sure it was mingled with tears.

I will never forget the nights siting in the tents on the camp ground and the cannons going off and I am sure my eyes, must have been as big as saucers. And looking into your face, and seeing the well I guess joy, and even the touch of awe, as we all realized the "boys" were letting us know that they appreciated us remembering THEM..

No.. I too will not forget all of that. I made more friends new friends in those 4 days then I have made in years.

And number of you are now numbered among my dearest and closest friends.
Jim
