Evening all.
I watched this movie last night, and was surprised how much I liked it, even though it is pure post CW schmaltz. The movie stars Van Johnson and in her first role, Janet Leigh. It's set in post CW Missourri, where bad feelings are still felt between neighbors who fought for one side and the other. Johnson plays a wandering school teacher, who comes to the McBean farm. He has some news to tell the family about their son and brother Ben, but finds it is not an easy thing to do. Naturally Van falls in love with Janet ( who wouldn't), and all is going well until Van finally tells the family that he fought for the Union. The Father, played by veteran character actor Thomas Mitchell, is of course a true Johnny Reb, kicks the erstwhile Johnson out of his place.
Will not tell the ending, but will say it is very well acted, and left me with a tear or two as you watch the folks in Missouri trying to get on with their lives after the CW.
The film was directed by Roy Royland, and is based on a novel by MacKinlay Kantor.
