We have video-on-demand and I was hoping there would be programs on revolutionary history for the 4th, but all the offerings were "Ice Road Truckers" and "Ax Men." I try to watch the History Channel on Tuesday mornings for "Civil War Journal", and I also find interesting history shows on the Biography Channel and A&E in the mornings if you get these channels. It used to be that on July 4th one channel (I unfortunately don't remember which one specifically) would broadcast "Gettysburg" repleat with non-edited scenes for the shorter movie version, but as far as I know this hasn't been done for a couple of years.
I will also send an e-mail to the History Channel. Thank you for the information...:>) |
The History Channel did show "The Revolution" all day on the 4th. It's actually a pretty good series.
TBS used to show the long version of "Gettysburg" on Super Bowl Sunday (along with "Gone With the Wind.") I've not seen that film anywhere else or any other time on TV. _________________ "Let us have faith that right makes might..."

This is what I recently came across: | Quote: | History, n. An account mostly false, of events mostly unimportant, which are brought about by rulers, mostly knaves, and soldiers, mostly fools.

Seems to me the rant-about programming of the said channel fits the described to a T!

There is another great example of "historic" programming coming up on the above mentioned (can't even use the name anymore) is the Psychology of Batman.

Have you guys seen any of these on the History Channel lately? The Unknown Civil War had a great episode about the Irish brigade...oh, and one about Michael Shaara....
Civil War Combat even had an episode about the Hornet's Nest at Shiloh...
Thankfully, I bought the Civil War Combat series, and have most of the Civil War Journal series on DVD.
Also, where the heck has Ken Burns "The Civil War" disappeared to?
Has society become so stupid that history has be dumbed down to the point it ain't history no more?
Good grief. Even my poor old 73 year young grandpaw said the other day that the stuff on the History Channel is about stuff younger than him.

Hi Violet...I'm sorry I missed those episodes. Guess I didn't tune in at the right time, but it seems everytime I do, "Ice Road Truckers" or something like that is on. I used to watch "Civil War Journal" every Tuesday morning before work, but lately a cartoon show "Liberty's Kids" (I think is the name) has been on. While I like the fact there is a show about history targetted toward young children, there seems to be so little programming for the rest of us. The History Channel as we knew it is, for the most part, "history" I'm afraid...
Hopefully by enough of our protests programming will change and feature only history - not only 20th century history but before.

Ken Burns' Civil War usually is played on PBS at the time of the sweeps and pledges. So I would expect it to pop up again at some point end of September - beginning of October _________________ I Remain

Anna et al,
Is CW Journal now off the air or has it moved to another slot?
Respectively,

The last time I checked, CW Journal is still taping on my Tivo every Tuesday morning, along with Save Our History, which is a great series, too.
I wish the HC would make a new Civil War Battlefield preservation vid for Save Our History. The old one has great information, but is way out of date with the current needs and preservation efforts.

| I also agree with you 100%. The only good shows you can see now are Civil War Journal which sometimes reruns at 6 am central time. The last recent show other than that was a special on Sherman's March a few years ago. Now, I can watch on that channel is reruns if I am up early enough. This is the subject our nation needs to know, not hearing how people think the Earth will end. The Civil War on the History Channel will soon be no more. |

| Just saw an ad on some other channel for the History (?) Channel, touting shows for the American working man. Only catch is that one of them, Ice Road Truckers, is all about Canadians. Jeez. |

Still complaining? I don't know why. They had fine programs on yesterday...like a whole show devoted to Spam.
America Eats? Good stuff there too. They even throw in a little history in those episodes.
They seriously should change the name of the station. Quit kidding everyone.
Their slogan could be "crap that other stations wouldn't dare to air." _________________ "Let us have faith that right makes might..."

| Hey, I like Spam. Might have to have some Spam and eggs for breakfast today, plus it helped win WWII. The show that caught my eye yesterday as I surfed through (it is close to the Big Ten Network on my cable system) was an hour long show on mold and fungus. Athlete's foot in the Roman Legions? |

So are you getting a lot out of the Big Ten Network? I'm not. All the games I've really wanted to see have been on ESPN or ABC (which is basically the same thing) Iowa's 50+ point trashing of Minnesota may have been on the Big Ten Network.
Basketball might be a different story, but I know of at least one Purdue game that no one carried. _________________ "Let us have faith that right makes might..."

I am enjoying the Big Ten Network quite a bit. Really like the Big Ten Tonight and just watched the Hawks beat Penn State again yesterday. Die hard Hawkeye fan who can watch a game twice with no problem.
I am looking forward to basketball to be able to see more games, plus coverage of collegiate wrestling, something our local papers don't seem to acknowledge to exist. |
