My .02 for what its worth..
RE the Cyclorama..
After being in there sevefral times doing research and sipping coffee with a couple of the rangers, I share the general park staffs opinion.. Blow the damn thing up all ready..
A while back I shared the thought in another thread. Line up 50 period Arty pieces, give em live ammo, and use the damn thing for target practice.

Don't get me wrong. I think it's great that Ziegler's Grove will be rehabilitated and am glad that we've got the new VC despite it's many flaws within.
However, the two buildings coming down were there at my first visit and were there at my last visit. Perhaps it's like a really annoying and ugly pet you've owned. It might drive you nuts. It might need a lot of maintenance, but it's been with you through several years of life events. You may not have cared for the "outside", but you cared for it's inside character and if it moved on, there'd at least be a slight feeling of emptiness. The buildings themselves may not be important or aesthetically pleasing, but what they held inside certainly was.
I'm not saying I'll shed a tear when these building are razed, but... _________________ "Let us have faith that right makes might..."

For well over 1/2 of my life I stopped in the Cyclorama and visitors center almost every trip to Gettysburg. Sure they were kinda cramped and needed repairs, but after years of visiting they became like a friend who is rough around the edges and need a shave, but they were enjoyable and provided many great memories of past trips. In later years I stood in front of the glass cases where the long arms were displayed and wondered where the balding, pudgy, squinting guy looking back at me came from. He started out as a trim young man full of hell and fun and turned into a grampa seemingly overnight. Yet I'm a realist and know that nothing lasts forever. It will be nice to see Zeiglers grove restored as much as it can be and the view of the Emmittsburg Rd unobstructed from the Cemetery. Was it worth it? Maybe.

Guys - while in no way shape or form making light of your sentimental comments (and fully understand those sentiments) may I respectfully remind you that at some point there was an Amusement Park atop of LRT and probably some folks got used to that also.
Should have we kept it then?
We have complained high and low about how the new VC went the "whole War" route and perhpas did so at the expense of telling a "fuller" story of the Battle itself.
At the same we all agreed that NOTHING beats stomping the field itself
We marveled at completely new interpreetations and beter understanding of the events as they happened because of historical restoration of Codori-Trostle thicket, Devil's Den, Tri-Field, D-shaped field and other areas. Do I even have to mention the National Blight....er... I mean the Tower???
So... perhaps it is sad - its like saying goobye to an 'old friend'! But (again like I said before) - if the ONLY thing that came out of it was the proper restoration of Zieglers Grove - IMHO it's worth EVERYTHING!
So - out with the old and in with.... THE OLD old!!! _________________ I Remain

And Larry - not to worry - you can still do this in the new VC _________________ I Remain

The less I see of that guy the better. The one in 1969 with the ponytail and tie dye tee shirt is far more acceptable. _________________ "We have come to stay" Stones brigade on July 1st 1863.
I'm pretty sure that even I wouldn't complain about the height of cornstalks. (Unless they block your view of other cars at an intersection.) _________________ "Let us have faith that right makes might..."

I think what the park is doing with repaving is all well and good but I just don't understand why they do this stuff in August ... I mean, it's not like it's snowing in late September there ... is it?
I really like those dual detour signs that lead back to one another. It's like having a cul-de-sac on both ends of a street. _________________ "Let us have faith that right makes might..."

Hey CD,
I now on a regular basis work with contractors large and small on a daily basis.
When they are dealing with a government agency naturally everything goes out to bid.
The bids are submitted. Invariably no one who is on the side of the customer ever thinks to include in the bidding prospectus, that the work should be done between such and such dates.
So the job goes out to the lowest bidder, and guess what, they come when THEY can fit into THEIR schedule..
I will bet a hamburger at the Gingerbread man that this is what happened.
Any takers?

I've yet to see anything that states what the original color for this building was. I hope it was red like this, but if not this will still be a definite improvement.
The building to the left of the Wills House, if it's the one that currently contains an ice cream parlor, still has a shell imbeded just above the door. It's difficult to see in this photograph though.
