Visitors sometimes have a hard time finding a parking space at the new GNMP visitor center. Electronic signage will alert visitors when the lots is full and direct them to park at the outlets.
This story is hardly noteworthy, but I just wanted to point out the irony in that they recently created designated parking for "green" vehicles and now they want to make signs that require the use of electricity.
Perhaps 100% solar powered signs weren't an option. _________________ "Let us have faith that right makes might..."

Just remember, they are having a hard time making the payments.................nobody goes there.........visitation is down.........
Good point.
And it goes back to my premise about the rate changes in the museum-
-folks are going inside the building, but few are buying tickets for their attractions.
Maybe I'm oversimplifying it, but my first guess is they aren't buying because the price is too high. And if the price is too high, why raise it as they are planning on doing in January? _________________ "Let us have faith that right makes might..."

OK, I'm being facetious.
(Although the thought of more trees coming down on monuments and markers did cross my mind.)
Just think what 2 feet of snow could have done. Anyone get out there before the snow melted? _________________ "Let us have faith that right makes might..."

If anyone missed me, wassup?
As for me, a series of circumstances that are too long to explain kept me from moving to the York, PA area. It was pretty darn close. And although fate leads me to believe that I belong where I am, I can't help but think that I may have let a golden opportunity to slip out of my grasp. Even if you're not supposed to live where you love to vacation, I still envy those of you who can go to Gettysburg at a moments notice.
Although I think I may be making an annual trek to Gettysburg from now on as opposed to the normal semi-annual visit. I'm still drawn to that place and it may still be growing on me. Nothing but good memories of the place - perhaps enhanced by the fact that I've been there only when the temps are warm.
This may sound cheesy, but I want to make it a goal of mine to do whatever I can to make anyone's trip to Gettysburg that much better. Gettysburg is like my Disneyland and I'd love to see others enjoy it at least half as much as I do.
There's my personal commentary for the month. _________________ "Let us have faith that right makes might..."

While i'm in as much a rush to see the Ziegler's Grove area rehabilitated, it does make sense that they will keep the parking lot, as it currently exists, until after the 150th. Besides, the razing or transplant of the Cyclorama building does not appear to be imminent.
And I'm glad to know that keeping the parking lot around that is across from the National Cemetery is in line with my own thoughts. (although it was probably a no-brainer that parking was very much needed for folks who wanted to visit the cemetery.) _________________ "Let us have faith that right makes might..."

Frickin' morons.
This is one of the neatest monuments at Gettysburg.
Can't we make a crime like this a FEDERAL offense since it occurred on federal property? That seems to work for relic hunting. When was the last time you've heard that relic hunting was discovered on any battlefield? I don't necessarily mean someone being caught doing it, since that would be even harder, but, at minimum, actual evidence of digging? The penalties for relic hunting are enormous.
OK. After surfing the web, maybe relic hunting occurs more often than I thought.
Still, steeper penalties, like those for vandalism on federal property, could be a deterrent for some idiots.
It is a federal crime to damage archaeological sites on federal lands or to remove artifacts from federal property. Unauthorized metal detecting and artifact collecting are strictly forbidden in the park. Felony ARPA penalties are up to $250,000 and/or two years in jail. For a second offense it is $250,000 and/or five years. Aside from ARPA, there are a number of other federal laws that protect park resources. The National Park Service takes its responsibility to enforce those laws very seriously. _________________ "Let us have faith that right makes might..."

One thing is for certain. GMNP has finally gotten its foot out of its ass.
That Andrews SS monument that got spraypainted the other day has already been cleaned. Most pleasing of all, nobody tried to lay out a line of utter horseshit as they did during the Peace Light fiasco.......they just went out and fixed it.
The change of leadership in that Dept is noticable and everybody involved up there, from Supt Kirby to the least senior maintenance guy, deserves our sincere thanks and congratulations for fixing an embarrassing situation.

We’re extremely pleased with how quickly the paint was removed, and that the Park took a page out of their Preservation Brief #38, which states that “Removing graffiti as soon as it appears is the key to its elimination–and recurrence.”
Experience shows that prompt removal of graffiti is one of the most effective measures against its recurrence. _________________ "Let us have faith that right makes might..."

Which brings me back to Corydons question; should such vandalism be a Federal Crime?
I dont have any real problem with that for an adult, but I'd hate to tag a 13 year old kid with a Federal rap for being a 13 year old kid? To me, in a perfect world, there would have to be some kind of bizarre balance to make the punishment fit the crime.
For example, those yutz's who pulled down Collis, the 4th NY and the arm of the 11th Mass, being at least old enough to drive and attach ropes or chains with come-a-longs or wratchet straps.....are certainly old enough, skilled enough, and pre-meditated enough to throw the whole damned Federal book at them.
On the other hand, if Little Jimmy from Biglersville spends the night huffing glue with some local kids and vandalizing monuments.......despite my innitial feelings......maybe throwing him in the slammer for seventy years is not the best option.
That would depend on how much I liked "Little Jimmy" though.
All things considered, and me being no lawyer, I'd have to say that with a few commonsense caveats, I'd have no problem making this shit a Federal Crime.....but its all moot because we never catch the bastards anyway, big or little. And I use plurals because there is no way one isolated kid is going out by himself and deciding to do this kind of thing,....its done in groups, for the benefit of the group.
I know full well that adults are capable of vandalism, but people who spraypaint tits and moustaches on monuments are kids.
Errant, deviant little bastards, but kids nonetheless.
I dont know quite how you solve this problem. I think the best way has probably just been shown to us by the GNMP. You address the situation immediately and any handiwork by the guilty party is utterly gone in 24 hours.........and hope you catch a break on finding the culprits
I hope somebody snags one someday.

Yeah, I'd certainly cut a minor a break....BUT, like in many other cases, perhaps you could go after his/her parents.
A minor should have to at least help clean it up and/or do some community service...and if the minor can't pay for the cleanup, perhaps their parents can. _________________ "Let us have faith that right makes might..."
