Suffice to say pretty interesting reading for me. Christina said most of it very well. I like to think I'm the rather rare native that has an idea what he has in his hometown - but trust me - it's not nearly as idyllic once you live here as it appears from the outside.
Once again - that Rick is a pretty smart dude for keeping it at arm's length.
As for your orginal question Chris, I think I'll be stopping in daily from now until 4/17/11. _________________ "Hey, does anyone know where the Gettysburg to Littlestown railroad goes?"
As I have been sitting here on Career Builder, I looked up a couple jobs near the Gettysburg area. And on advice here and kind of what I had in mind already, I just wanted to be within an hour of Gettysburg anyway. I don't have to live in town or even work in town. Harrisburg, York, other cities are well close enough. Actually 1-2 hours would be ideal. It's close enough to visit the park at a moments notice, but at the same time, it wouldn't get watered down either from being there at least 5 days a week.
But back to looking for a job. The idea of living near Gettysburg may not be enough motivation to spend all the time and effort in looking for something there. It almost seems foolish to waste the time looking there when I should probably be looking for something here where all my friends and family are. I need another motivating factor. Aside from a companion, even if my cousin, who's an Ohio Civil War buff, and his family lived in the area I'd know at least one person I could have an occassional meal with. Aside from that, in lieu of a forceable transfer within my company, it's probably too far-fetched to take on such an improbable search.
Money is not a terribly motivating factor. A 100K job offer would certainly be hard to pass up, but no one's going to offer nearly that much.
So perhaps it's just as well that I'll just live out the remaining years of my life here and hope for the best. _________________ "Let us have faith that right makes might..."

Hi Chris,
I have gone back and fourth on whether to write here, or to do it behind the scenes...
But in keeping with the exhortations I have recieved from othersd to continuie to be open about me, I am going to share here a bit of what happened to me over the past ohhh couple of years...
Like so many here the sirens call that is Gettysburg I too have listen to it and almost given into its wooing.
Much like you events, circumstances were pushing me driving me hard to look at a major change in my life.
For over three years with careers changing, health a mess and another relationship struggling and then through a struggle with my faith, I tried real hard to move there... Even to be upfront with it, starting an organization that eventually would lead me there.
But divine providenced deemed other wise, and I began to realize that while Gettysburg siren call will always be there, it wasnt in divine providences cards.
As I look back on it now, I find myself shaking my head... I almost made huge mistakes, ones that I would have regretted to the end of my days.
But also taught me a big lesson. And Christina, and Rick have both said it so eloquently. Getysburg has its own small town issues. Its stil tryinbg to come to grips with its place in the grand scheme of thing, to th epoint of risking its soul for a few gold plated dollars.
As I found out its the Peyton Place of the civil war historical sites. There is such pettiness, rumor mongering, and back biting all in the name of power. Personaly I dont need it nor want it...
But thats me...... I cannot speak for you..
If its your lifes passion to get down there, GO FOR IT! If its what you want the most go for it! But do it and I think from what I have read, do it with your eyes wide open, your head set on straight, and your focus not on the sirens call, but on the reality of what living in that area is going to be like.
I wish for you the best.. Follow your dream... Life is too short.

I guess I should have been more clear with my initial post. I said Gettysburg area, but didn't really mean to insinuate that I had to live in the actual borough, just somewhere reasonably close.
I don't think the back-stabbing, etc. would affect me anyway. I wouldn't go there to run for town council or anything. So even if I did live or work in town, I doubt that any of that would be a problem. Maybe I'd be more likely to run into that hellcat in a wheelchair, who's trying to get everyone to be ADA Compliant, but I doubt that I would even say a word to her.
As I said, this is probably all a pipe dream anyway. Something could easily come up any day now and this whole idea could fade away. _________________ "Let us have faith that right makes might..."

The Mr's and I have seriously considered moving South near Gettysburg. At one time we had Gettysburg itself in mind. Actually looked at couple of houses, but that's as far as it went. Should we move it will probably be West of Gettysburg or maybe West Virginia. We all have dreams.

That's probably farther than I'll ever get. Hagerstown or Frederick doesn't look too bad. I don't know if I could live in Maryland though. For one thing, my Indianapolis Colts stuff wouldn't go over too well there.
At least it sounds like you have some options. Not everyone is so lucky. _________________ "Let us have faith that right makes might..."

Sometimes you make your own luck.
Chris, as long as you stay west of Frederick, that Indy Colts gear should not cause you many visits by vandals. Come east of there and all bets are off......I cannot be responsible for my people.
Frederick, (known as FredNeck to my generation back in the day) has come an awfully long way in the last twenty years or so. Its really quite a happenin' little joint and a town definately on the upward trend.
Still, even in Frederick, you might get some shit for wearing a Manning jersey.

Why don't you just move to Shiloh? Nobody there would give a damn what football team jersey you wear. Just kiddin' dude. My situation as far as GB goes is about totally perfect for Bev & I.
There one day.......gone the next......dual calamities......but fortunate enough to have made many very, very good friends in Adams County as well as in Hoggerstown & the Civil War geek world in general. Check my nonexistant Facebook page for details.
I'm hoping one of our Adams County friends will see this and will soon check to see if our recently repaired terminally ill fickle GB oil burning heater is still working smoothly and call me w/details..............hint...hint?????????

I still wish we had a picture of Stan in his Culps Hill Tower Cub Scout Gettin' Gear. I wasnt there, but I have the most potent image of Stan slogging his way up those steps with those baloons............it must have seemed a very long climb.
The only thing that could have made that funnier was if he had an eggplant stuffed down the front of his pants........
I laugh just thinking about it. The man is dedicated to research, thats for sure.
