Hi all,
Over the last decasde or more, I have been down there ohhhhh 17 times was the max in a year. It turned in a mecca.
I have never take Gettysburg for granted, and have many a good memory (And some bad) over the years.
However as jobs have changed, money has grown tighter, its harder and harder to make the trip.. With gas over $4 a gallon now.. wellll you get the picture.....
Bev and I will be down there for the Bliss farm walk.. But other then that, MAYBE Rememberance day.. Even that is now up in the air.. JIM _________________ "The Flag, THE FLAG, Oh THE FLAG! G.K. Warrens last words on his death bed, August 8,1882

I recall walking down to the Bliss Farm marker with my son and
to my left... a familiar voice, saw him on TV a lot Ed ? won't even
try to spell it off the top of my head. You already know who I'm
talking about . Ed Bearse ? In any case, he was giving a one on
one guided walk and it was nice to over hear his comments while
I could.
In any case, I wish there were photos of this farm pre - gettysburg
or at least some building outlines in stone. Still, the area is amazing
in terms of its location and history. Perhaps some day somebody will
get access to that site with ground penetrating radar and determine
the boundries of the house and barn.

Actually, they have a pretty good idea about where the barn and house sat. The ramp for the Bank Barn lasted a good long time. I have a picture of a tank going up that ramp in about 1916. Since you can see the monuments in the picture, you can orient yourself to where and how the barn was located.
It's cool photo I picked up from Photographer Extraordinaire Mike Waricher I'll see if I cant post it later.
Regards,

Speaking of the Bliss Farm, how's Long Lane these days?
(the historic lane and not the paved street by the same name.)
They went to all that trouble to clean it up and when i was there a year ago, it had already become overgrown with weeds. _________________ "Let us have faith that right makes might..."

Can't help you much there, Corydon. I rarely get over that way as I'm not a fan of Colt Park. Last I saw, it was an overgrown mess.........but maybe it's better now?

Work, of any decent kind, is incredibly difficult to find in the Gettysburg area........so draw large circles and dont ignore places like Frederick, Westminster and even Hagerstown............but be warned, its a real bitch to find decent paying jobs in the area..........harder than you would believe.
Regards,
Rick
My head may not be on straight, but my memory is still there. I thought you had mentioned Hagerstown as a possible living destination...and sure enough...
I saw a job posted there today and was thinking of applying. I still admit it's probably foolhardy to even think of applying for jobs out of state, hope to land one, and think about moving there. _________________ "Let us have faith that right makes might..."

We will be in town on Sunday... I waited way to long to get a room any where close, so Saturday night we will be out at Carlisle coming into town during the morning.. _________________ "The Flag, THE FLAG, Oh THE FLAG! G.K. Warrens last words on his death bed, August 8,1882

Gettysburg College graduation ceremonies are this weekened. That's probably one reason you had trouble. I remember one year I "had" to stay at the Dobbin's House B&B during graduation week because there was nothing left in town that was available. So since then, I've looked to avoid being there that Friday and Saturday night of graduation.
And actually, I will be arrriving in town Sunday night. Any chance you might still be around? _________________ "Let us have faith that right makes might..."

I'm praying for great weather next week (and hopefully there will be some great weather left for you as well.)
We may luck out because this week it didn't sound like they've had good weather. I almost scheduled my vacation for this week.

Hope the weather does go your way. It did for me and my Grandson. weekend before last. We went to all the places the 52nd Inf. was and fought and have some good pictures thanks to Petestreet!.
Just a word of caution. Ticks are bad this year. The little buggers are jumping on everything.
Had to laugh at my Grandson when we was over on Benners Hill. I was taking some pictures of him in the field where the 52nd was and on leaving, he always likes to take a different trail than me.
Got down close to the cul-d-sac he let out a yell, and he was in attack mode because it sounded like a Rebel yell, and looking over at him saw a snake cross right in front of him. heh heh. It was a 2ft. Garter Snake and it crawled under a dead stump. I don't remember where Petestreet went to! har har!!
Heavy tick area there for sure.
Weather map says this coming weekend is going to be nice.
Mosquitoes are supposedly out in force too. At least here in Indiana.
I'm glad it's not Cicada season for another 10 years. I remember them in 2004. _________________ "Let us have faith that right makes might..."

Chris and all,
Chris first of all thank you for the heads up regarding the bugs.. We are loaded up with the necessary repellents.
We are headed down after work on Saturday.... Will be arriving in town fairly late and staying at our usual HQ.
We are going to join the Bliss Farm tour as Bev wants to hear about her 12th NJ Boys. And since its been a while, I made a point of this one.
We shall see who ever is going to be there at the Bryan Farm, 1pm.

I'll post about my trip and my traffic ticket sometime. Yes, I got pulled over by a Jellystone Park Ranger for not stopping at the stop sign in the National Cemetery parking lot. I probably did not come to a complete stop, but his assessment was far from the truth. There is no way to drive thru there in the afternoon without at least making a running "stop" unless you want to blindly gamble on hitting someone.
I always get depressed when my trips are over and I have to come back home. _________________ "Let us have faith that right makes might..."

The Bliss Farm was harder to get to than it should be. I parked on Queen(?) and thought I could just walk right over there from a few feet out. The grass/weeds was too high and there was a creek going through there along with some standing water in spots.
So I walked all the way towards the Emmitsburg Road and found a couple openings in the fencing and then made my way back west and dodged the guys trimming around the fences.
Maybe next time I'll wear some waders and save myself some time. If I wasn't always so overly concerned about my appearance, I'd wear junk when it's called for.
Despite one morning of a misty rain, the weather was great all week. No complaints.
As for my ticket...when I drove back thru there I stopped and watched as NONE of the 4 vehicles going through there actually came to a complete stop. I guess I was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. I didn't care how the ranger characterized me as being in a hurry (probably true), but not even attempting to stop. He was coming north on the Taneytown road as I was turning south onto that road. That area was getting backed up all week, generally with tour buses waving me thru so they could finish making the turn. I can't really fight the ticket unless I want to drive all the way out there for a court appearance. All things considered, I guess $50 isn't all that bad. _________________ "Let us have faith that right makes might..."
