Hello...
Robert Redford took on this task ... should be interesting and the
comparison to modern times will offer some interesting debate. |

I'll wait a few years to view it on cable. Besides, it's REDford. _________________ "The revolution will not be televised." |

Don't tell me that Redford makes some political point with this movie. It looks like an interesting film, but if it goes off on some tangent about modern politics, I'll probably dislike it.
I prefer to be entertained and informed and not given some ideological slant that has little if anything to do with the history they are supposed to be portraying. _________________ "Let us have faith that right makes might..."

Hello...
From what I have seen of it, the story remains " political " to it's time
and... what you take away... is how it relates to similar events today.
Just as long as the film is true to the facts, I will enjoy it. |

Hello...
Not a bad review. The film isn't playing anywhere near my home
so I'll have to wait for the DVD or when it makes it on television.
Not sure if the " defiant " woman walking to the gallows is what
the history books detail... from what I have read she was pretty
torn up and devistated right up till they dropped the floor beneath
her. ( If that's not what is depicted in the film ? ) I've always thought
it was odd that the President of the Southern Confederacy and Lee
were not charged with treason and hung much in the way that Mary
was. I need to find a good book on that subject. |

| I lost all interest when they described it as an allegory. |

They may have been hanged had Booth acted sooner. Lincoln probably saved both of them with his forgiving words between the fall of Richmond and his assassination.
Then again, Lee wouldn't have hanged if US Grant had anything to say about it. And I'm sure he did. _________________ "Let us have faith that right makes might..."

CD, Jeffn Davis was in Federal custody for the better part of two years.
Why was Davis not brought to trial for treason? _________________ "The revolution will not be televised." |

Because Davis was smart, and may have brought an argument for sesession that the Fed Govt dident want to get into. They won, let well enough alone. _________________ Jeff |

I obviously don't have all the answers, but one was quite possibly because a trial would have been held in Virginia, but more likely it was because there wasn't a great clamor in the North to go through circus of a trial. Most wanted to move beyond the war by then.
Even abolitionist Horace Greeley, among others, helped post Davis' $100,000 bail. _________________ "Let us have faith that right makes might..."

Evening all,
I saw the movie tonight, and I thought it was very good. Sure, there are some things I did not like, as the Assassination scenes were rushed through. That said, very well acted, and very good in historical detail as in uniforms, where the trial was held, and the hanging.
Nothing earth shattering, but thought it was a good movie. One thing I did not do while watching it was to compare politics back then and now. I just focused on back then.
Hope all are well.
Regards from the Garden State,

The South chafed under the bit of Northern Ocuption troops for years after the war, I think hanging Lee would have caused massive civil unrest. Chris (?), The force of arms, to this day, in my mind was only a temporary solution to the question of secession from the " union." Using today's vernacular of bi-partisan mumbo-jumbo, those who held sway back in the day, just like today were, only avoiding the issue.
