Thought I'd start a new thread to avoid putting everything under the Gettysburg News and History thread and to narrow down the topic a bit. _________________ "Let us have faith that right makes might..."

Hopefully they didn't "run over" it when drawing out the water lines from East Cemetery Hill to the outhouse over at Spangler's Spring. _________________ "Let us have faith that right makes might..."

I dont have the computer skills to map it out, but it's out there across Rock Creek from Spanglers Meadow. I'm not sure if it's on Private Property or not, I dont think it is........but its all in how you get there.....this might be another case where Dean Schultz would be the guy to contact.
If you dont mind stomping across the creek, that makes things easier.
Its there though, along with several other Taney Foundations..........I've been there myself several times and I know many others here have also.
Things are cool back there.........quiet like,... and in my experience anyway, a little creepy.
Regards,

Thanks for the info. (So few of us probably enjoy viewing a pile of historic rubble. )
I wonder if a paid battlefield guide could take me there. I also still need to get over to Lost Avenue as well.
The next time I'm in town, I really think that I'm going to try and just stay there for the duration and see everything that I've missed so far. It's amazing to me that after 5 trips there, that I still haven't seen everything there is to see.
I wouldn't mind getting over to the remains of McCallister's Mill, but it definitely sounds like that is on private property. _________________ "Let us have faith that right makes might..."

Interestingly, it doesn't mention the upturned cannon markers that signify an HQ. _________________ "Let us have faith that right makes might..."

The regiment was commanded at Gettysburg by Captain Orpheus S. Woodward while its colonel, Strong Vincent, led the brigade. Pennsylvania governing board rules prohibited placing the likeness of commanders on regimental monuments, so the statue atop the monument is not identified and, officially, may represent any officer of the regiment. But it is Strong Vincent.
On July 2nd Vincent's brigade was intercepted by a staff officer desperately seeking men to cover the vital position of Little Round Top. On his own responsibility Vincent diverted the brigade to hold the hill. When the 16th Michigan began to fall back under heavy pressure Vincent mounted a boulder to rally them, shouting, "Don't give an inch!" The line held but Vincent was badly wounded. He was moved to a nearby farm where he died five days later.
The statue is not an entirely accurate representation of Vincent on Little Round Top. He was not holding a sword but a riding crop, a memento from his pregnant wife, who was an accomplished horsewoman. After the battle she gave birth to a daughter who died within the year and is buried next to her father. _________________ "Let us have faith that right makes might..."

Jim,
It's there. There are links to links to links. If you click on the one that says, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, & 15th, it takes you to another screen that can lead you to the link below:
What's the best way to reach it? I just recently realized that I have never been there. I think it's because, in part, that I'm one of many who confused it with the SNYDER Farm. _________________ "Let us have faith that right makes might..."

You can get there many ways. I'm probably biased, but as long as you are going there, you might as well start at the Alabama monument and WALK down to it in the steps of Law.
You used to be able to drive down there, but now down by where the lane makes the turn from Bushmans, they have an "Authorized Vehicles Only" sign. No problem, walking there is better anyway.
If you'd rather you can just stand at the top of Devils Den and walk down the other way too.
The coolest way to get there is to walk down through the D Shaped Field though.

They didn't map out the Bushman Farm on this map for some reason, but it sounds like they aren't too far apart. I've walked to the Bushman Farm from two different directions and am still not sure how I've missed the Slyder Farm. I'm kind of glad I did as is gives me another new adventure.
I think I'll follow the steps of Law. I've stayed out of jail this long, so why start breaking rules now? _________________ "Let us have faith that right makes might..."

This makes me very happy. I've actually never been to the north side of Benner's Hill. I wasn't aware that there was anything to see on that side of the road until a few months ago. _________________ "Let us have faith that right makes might..."
