Actually IMHO our Ellis would be a good sourse on Cross be it that she is a NH gal!

As to his premonition - we all remember the exchange (supposedly right before the Brigade stepps of into Immortality)
Hancock to Cross - Colonel, this is your last battle without a Star
Cross - General, this IS my LAST BATTLE

Stan....Have you seen these lyrics for "One-Ball Riley"?

I don't know about this Cross fellow!

Parson

ONE-BALL RILEY
-Traditional Irish

As I was sittin by the fire
talking to O'Riley's daughter
suddenly a thought came into my head:
I'd like to shag O'Riley's daughter

(Chorus): Giddy aye ay, giddy aye ay,
giddy aye ay for the one-ball Riley
Giddy aye ay: (three claps or stomps)
try it on yer own big drum!

Riley played on the big bass drum;
Riley had a mind for murder and slaughter
Riley had a bright red glitterin eye
and he kept that eye on his lovely daughter

Got me a bottle and a condom too,
got me hands on Riley's daughter
settled me down for a good old time
doin things we shouldn't oughter

Suddenly a footstep on the stair
who should it be but Riley out for slaughter
with two pistols in his hands
lookin for the man that shagged his daughter

Grabbed Old Riley by the ball,
rammed his head in a pail of water
shoved them pistols up his ass
a damn sight quicker than I shagged his daughter!

As I go walkin' down the street
People shout from every corner
There's the randy sonofabitch
That finally shagged Old Riley's daughter!

I remember the exchange but I'm wondering if he was like that before every battle. I'll have to go through O'Reilly again because I could swear that he felt he was going to die there as well.

Also, when was the first mention of this exchange between Hancock and Cross?

Cross's favorite marching song back when he was still colonel of the 5th was "One-Ball Riley." And it had nothing to do with team sports.

Corydon,

Check out My Brave Boys---To War with Colonel Cross & the Fighting Fifth by Pride and Travis. 2001. University Press of New England.

You're going to make me read a book!?

I just wanted your incite. I didn't want to have to do any actual work.

Hello there

I’ve just enlisted into this group and would like to throw in a few snippets of information regarding Colonel Cross.
The reason why he was not flavour of the month with the 148th Pa was that he had replaced Lt. Col McFarlane as regimental commander on the evening of 30th June with Col H B McKeen of the 81st Pa. The 148th thought that Cross had a down on them:
Extract from Major Forster’s address at the dedication of the regimental memorial Gettysburg 1889
officers and men of our regiment were almost daily, from the day we broke camp on the Rappahannock until we reached Gettysburg, made to suffer wrong and injustice from him. One officer in particular, at the very out-set of the campaign, seemed to have incurred his open displeasure. That officer was Lieutenant-Colonel Robert McFarlane,”
This account is by the author of the 5th NH regimental history, Surgeon W Childs, who recounts this last meeting with Colonel Cross on 2 July 1863:
He said,
"Good-by! It will be an awful day. Take care of yourself; I must go into the fight,
but I fear I shall be killed. Good-by!" and away he rushed to lead his command
. .

Incidentally Colonel Cross’s marching song is known in these here parts as
“ One Eyed Riley” The words sung are also slightly different to those on the thread but refer to the same actions and activity. Mind you they are usually sung after the intake of large amounts of ale and porter so maybe independent verification is required?
